Zeev, it is true that until around 150 years ago the whole area of what is now Israel, Jordan and South Lebanon included, was a waste land. Even after mid 19th century with the collapse of the Ottoman Empire the whole area was scarcely populated. That is why Jews had an easy time to settle there and expand the other Jewish towns.

Only upon the arrival of the Jews many Christians, the Templars included, Muslim and Arabs started also to settle there. BTW that is also the reason why the Brit's under the Balfour Declaration allocated what is now Israel and Jordan as a Home Land for Jews which BTW was also recognized by law of the US Congress in September 21, 1922.

As to Temple mount is was abandoned and in ruin even in 1875 as evidenced by those photographs.

lib.uchicago.edu

....... as was most of what is now Israel.

As to Muslim Holly sites in Jerusalem another myth how else on can explain the shambles of the Dome of the Rock at a time that the Muslim Ottoman Empire ruled over Jerusalem ??

For sure some Jew haters on SI will find some fancy explanation <GG> why the Old City and Temple Mount looks like a garbage dump under the rule of the Ottoman Empire .......... GEEEEE so much for the love of Jerusalem by Muslims 125 years ago <GGG>
