January has not exactly been a bullish belleweather. 'It the valuations stupid'. I caught some of the morning news today -- something about 47 pages of notes on TYCO's annual report concerning offshre subsidiaries -- I have not yet checked it out, but I see the stock is in the toilet yet again...

If the 'January effect' is as accurate as the bulls claim, then we will have a down year for the markets. If the average guy with a diversified portfolio does not have any reason to expect to beat the market, then having money in a money market account would clearly beat stocks this year, and that person should sell. Heck, the cookie jar in the kitchen might beat the stock market this year. That would be three down years -- the result of the bubble, not the recession.
