SAN FRANCISCO (CBS.MW) -- The networking equipment industry could soon see sales growth for the kinds of equipment that combines functions and automates networks, said Thomas Mock, Ciena's (CIEN: news, chart, profile) vice president of product portfolio management.

Mock addressed investors at the Banc of America Technology Conference. See full conference coverage.

Mock said he sees capital-spending-to-revenue ratios in the networking equipment industry returning to the stronger levels like those seen in the late 1990s. And he sees consolidation ahead for some of the companies in his industry.

He added that telecommunications carriers, the equipment makers' main customers, are getting back to historical spending levels.

Ciena shares were down 1.8 percent to $13.18 at midday.
