What's a few more dimensions among friends?

My favorite part is the orbifolding procedure in which new Calabi-Yau shapes are produced by gluing together various points on initial Calabi-Yau shapes then counting the odd and even dimensional holes thus helping us to more clearly understand the number of families of particles.

Man don't you get at least that? ;-)

The Elegant Universe -- I heartily recommend it as THE BOOK that can explain these bizarre things to laypeople; vastly superior to the more widely celebrated offerings by Stephen Hawking. Greene make repeated and richly imaginative analogies to things we encounter in our daily lives to aid the lay person in grasping concepts which would otherwise be beyond the reach of most of us. I am still working through the string theory part and it is an enormous intellectual challenge. I hold out hope that it may nonetheless be do-able simply because of Brian Greene's qualities as a writer.

In case you can't tell, I LOVE THIS BOOK.
