Any amount of quiting is good, be it for a day or a year. I've found that picking a date to quit helps, telling the wife and friends is important. I've found that when I'm smoking that I'm always quiting tomorrow, that why it's good to make the big quiting day public.
Also, if per chance you ever have a hospital stay (which I hope never happens), that's an excellent time to start quiting. The same goes for any illness that lies you up in bed, is a good starting point. But I know what you mean, nothing harder than quiting. Gad, I feel like having one right now....
