Your statment is a distortion of Powell's highminded position. Colin Powell has not stated the detainees were being mistreated. He believes that they should be given the protections of the Geneva Convention. Reasonable minds may disagree over whether these detainees qualify for such protection. Given that the purpose of detaining the men is to obtain information from them conferring such status would be a practical mistake....

The LA Times Reports:

latimes.com

The Secretary of State does NOT ask that the detainees be classified as PoWs. The story says that a senior State Department Official said that the Gonzales memo was inaccurate. Further, the Sr. State Department Official stated that the debate would NOT MATERIALY EFFECT THE TREATMENT OF THE DETAINEES as the illegal combatants are being treated humanely.
