Japan's Industrial Output Falls to Lowest Level in 26 Years

sg.news.yahoo.com

TOKYO, Jan 29 Asia Pulse - Industrial production fell 7.9 per cent to 96.9 (1995 = 100) in 2001, the largest decline since the 11 per cent plunge seen in the oil-crisis year of 1975, according to data released Tuesday by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.
Weak demand for such IT products as computers, cellular phones and semiconductors led to a 17.3 per cent fall in electric machinery output and a 10.9 per cent decline in general machinery output.

The industrial production index for December edged up 2.1 per cent from November to a seasonally adjusted 92.9, marking the first fourth increase in four months.

The inventory index slipped 1 per cent to 94.4 for the fourth consecutive month of decline, due to inventory adjustment efforts by electric machinery makers.

Despite December's gain in output, METI chief Takeo Hiranuma said, "The outlook is grave as demand remains uncertain."
