Moderate earthquake hits Los Angeles suburbs

sg.news.yahoo.com

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A moderate earthquake with a magnitude of 4.2 struck suburbs northeast of Los Angeles on Monday night, shaking windows but causing no damage or injuries, authorities said.

The earthquake struck at 9:54 p.m. PST (12:54 a.m. EST/0554 GMT on Tuesday) and was centred just north of the Ventura County city of Simi Valley about 22 miles (36 kms) northeast of Los Angeles. The quake was followed by at least three weaker aftershocks.

The initial jolt was felt over a wide area of southern California and officials said it lasted for about 15 seconds.

Simi Valley, which has a population of about 100,000 people, is the home of the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library.
