Globalization is the single dominant force in the work world," said Paul Saffo, a director of Institute for the Future, a nonprofit research firm that specializes in long-range forecasting. "There are a lot of people in the knowledge business who cluck in sympathy at unemployed blue-collar workers in the rust belt. But high-priced knowledge workers are at risk in a global environment because their jobs may go to India, or elsewhere."
Saffo added, "You look at the Research Triangle or Silicon Valley, and if these regions don't make the right moves, they could become the intellectual rust belts."
