AMDZone has a link to this EETimes story - StrongArm in the gunsights of AMD.

AMD did it again, now they're getting the guy who designed the original SrongArm, together with his latest designs.

Intel gets to have paid top dollar for the old designs...

Combjelly, Re: "Since the A4s already deliver at least 1.3GHz at less than 25 watts peak on their 0.18 micron process, I think AMD has a better shot at delivering than Intel."

So how did AMD get their processor in that thermal envelope? Did they have to reduce voltage? Did they have to tweak the manufacturing process? How does it affect yields? 25W is the thermal envelope on their 1.0GHz Athlon 4, so obviously they had to do something to get a 30% increase in frequency without increasing power (unless they are fudging the numbers - but then, that's a different problem).

Re: "I've an interesting question for you. Why did Compaq introduce the 1.3GHz A4 in their Evo line, and then plan on rolling out the mobile P4 in their Presario (i.e. consumer) line? Why the role reversal?"

I don't think Intel is planning on launching the Pentium 4-M until March. This must have been an early announcement to counter the AMD announcement - I'm not sure it was an actual launch. Therefore, I would wait before you assume that Compaq skipped the Pentium 4-M for their business line.
