That jump in the VIX is quite high. Here are the occurrences since the Sep low when the VIX hit an intraday high greater than 10% above the previous close:

10/12/01   16.9%
10/30/01   12.0%
11/12/01   15.0%
11/28/01   10.7%
1/29/02    12.4%
