HP/Compaq deal set for European approval
By Francesco Guerrera and Birgit Jennen in Brussels

Hewlett-Packard's $24bn takeover of Compaq is set to be cleared by European antitrust regulators, provided there are no last-minute objections from within the European Commission, according to people familiar with the situation.

It is understood that the Commission's competition experts have concluded that the deal between the two US computer groups would not pose serious antitrust problems despite the enlarged group's high share of some European information technology markets.

This means the takeover will receive approval from the European regulators on Thursday unless another Commission department raises objections. It is rare for other parts of the Commission to formally challenge the views of the competition unit.
