Grace, I hate to sound like a right wing nutburger (I am a nutburger, but I'm not right wing), but the govt. caused this. First, we had co. pension funds that were so poorly managed that folks ended up with nothing. So, the govt. created IRAs and 401Ks and so on. But they decided to impose ERISA, which followed the model of the pension funds, who were the problem in the first place. So, you end up with a piece of crap retirement system in which the only way to bet is bullish with, usually, really lousy mutual fund options. Or co. stock, which many are nearly coerced into purchasing. For buying into this flim flam, the employee is supposed to receive a temporary tax break and employer contributions.

Guess what? More and more cos. are reducing or eliminating contributions. And, in general, performance for the funds in these accounts stink. So, the only way to keep the money rolling, so the co. doesn't have the expense of setting up pension funds again, is to sell the concept that all you really need is a large cap value and a large cap growth fund with a fund or two around the edges. The names of the funds don't matter, as they're all the same. The entire process makes me want to gag.
