Unfortunately, success in the marketplace is not dictated by democratic vote.

I like it if it was cheap. If AMD paid a lot for the company then I don't like it.

hs2,

I think I like the idea, but the devil is in the details. How much is AMD going to pay (cash / shares). What's the current revenue of Alchemy, how competitive is the design in a relatively crowded MIPS / ARM field. Who is the keeper of the MIPS standard. SGI? Is it open, that is can anybody make a MIPS CPUs? Are the source compatible? Is MIPS strictly 32bit? Are there licensing requirements / fees associated with the MIPS "standard"?

Also, is the business viable? Can they theoretically continue what they have been doing, which is outsourcing to TMSC? Is it the fab capacity and advanced fabrication process that this business needs or strictly capital? What's the revenue? etc.

Joe

Heatsinker, Re: I think you are outnumbered Andreas!

I don't think this is a popularity contest...

I am not saying that this alleged acquisition is a waste of money but I have some problems with it. If AMD wants to return to profitability soon they have to cut down costs. Buying a new company that is losing money right now will do just the opposite. And it is very uncertain if the acquisition would pay off later IMO. It doesn't make sense first to quit the embedded processor market (and upsetting some customers with that move) and now wanting to return to it. I am very optimistic about the prospects of that markets (PDA, communication etc.) but AMD is much too late to the game.

Bottom line: If this acquisition is for real, AMD will almost certainly suffer in the short term (share dilution, added costs). It may or may not pay off later but I take a solid short-term profit over some possible profits in the future any day.
