Hi Carl,

You have excellent taste in business literature. I have Chancellor's "Devil Take the Hindmost" in my library, and I find it to be an excellent update of Charles Mackay's "Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds". They are a fine introduction to any individual considering putting money in the markets, and I highly recommend them both to thoughtful readers.

Re: You mean that our "Empire" can last forever providing we get rid of the hubris and hypocrisy?

This discussion is as old as the nation. I come down on the side of Mark Twain and the Anti-Imperialist League which was active a century ago. I believe you think America's hegemony of the world's commerce and homogenization of cultures is an acceptable future. I do not. Large swaths of American culture that is getting exported in the name of "globalization" is pathetic crap. Think of the fine cuisine and bistro culture of Paris replaced by McDonalds. Is this really a better future? I beg to differ. Think of WalMart bullying it's way into markets in Mexico and China, using its tremendous corporate treasury to ruthlessly destroy indigenous retailers. Is this what America should be all about? I beg to differ.

Face it, American corporate culture and its political lackeys are not a cultural advance for most of the world. They are bully-boys trying to satisfy greed and a lust for power. This is hardly a basis for civilization.
