Straits Times Index falls as investors shed blue chips

sg.news.yahoo.com

SINGAPORE (Reuters) - Singapore shares were weak by midday on Wednesday, as Wall Street's dive hurt upbeat sentiment and sparked a blue chip-led selloff, but some defensives attracted buying.

"We are looking for the market to take a bit of a breather after the strong run-up. We actually need valuations to catch up a bit to support these sort of share prices," said Sheree Tan, chief investment officer of Asia-Pacific equities at Morley Fund Management, which manages 1.5 billion pounds in the region.

"Liquidity is plentiful so we are not looking for a very significant correction, just some profit-taking and consolidation for a while."

Tonight I was reviewing AMAT historical stock splits for some
cost basis research I was doing. Since I had the numbers in
hand, I thought I would post the data here for the helluvit.

Trivia: If I calculated the numbers correctly, 1 share in
1980 would have split into 144 shares today, AMAT splits on
average every 2 years 10 months at an average price of
$72.34.

(I guess we can expect AMAT to split in January 2003 at a
price of $72.34! <g>)

Date Split PriceShares Issued/Outstanding in millions

04/02/80 3:2 $27 to $18 1.7 to 2.7
02/06/81 3:2 $34.50 to $23 3.1 to 4.7
05/16/86 2:1 $31 to $15.50 6.5 to 13.0
04/06/92 2:1 $39.50 to $19.75 17.3 to 34.6
10/05/93 2:1 $71.50 to $35.75 40.2 to 80.4
10/12/95 2:1 $98.5 to $49.25 89.6 to 179.2
10/13/97 2:1 $105.50 to $52.75 183.6 to 367.2
03/15/00 2:1 $171.19 to $85.59 388.3 to 776.6

Paleeez, I'm only joking with that split forecast - just
playing around!
