European Stocks May Fall; Shell, Infineon and HSBC Could Slide

London, Jan. 30 (Bloomberg) -- European stocks may fall as oil companies such as Shell Transport & Trading Co. decline with crude and Infineon Technologies AG and other semiconductor makers slide on concern about demand for chips and computers.

Futures on France's benchmark CAC 40 Index dropped 58 points to 4420. The U.K. benchmark FT-SE 100 Index may open 49 points lower, and Germany's DAX index could slide 16 points at the start of trading, according to IG Group Plc, a spread-betting firm.

U.S. stocks declined yesterday, led by Tyco International Ltd. and Williams Cos. on concern the companies may have misstated profits. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index's decline to its lowest level since Nov. 2 reflected eroding confidence in corporate accounting after the collapse of energy trader Enron Corp.

European stocks may be ``hit hard buy the widespread selloff in the U.S.,'' said Chris Hawkes, a trader at IG Group.
