Hynix could stand alone if DRAM prices rise - Commerce Minister

SEOUL, Jan 30, 2002 (AFXAsia via COMTEX) Newly appointed Commerce, Industry and Energy Minister Shin Kookhwan said Hynix Semiconductor could possibly survive on its own even without a deal with Micron Technology Inc if DRAM prices continue to recover.
"An independent survival is possible in case of (a continued) rise in DRAM prices, even if talks with Micron collapse," Shin told reporters.
Hynix could stand on its own should 128MB DRAM prices rise to 3.5 usd per unit, while an increase to about 45 usd levels would certainly allow the firm to be independently viable.
Separately, Yonhap news agency cited a bank official as saying that Shin's remarks reflect creditor banks' commitment not to sell Hynix cheaply.
The bank official said creditors will make a decision after studying Micron's position on the deal with Hynix.
