Debka, Schmebka. Last week Mubarek was part of a secret plot and this week he's not

What secret plot? Last week Debka reported that Mubarak was pissed as hell at Arafat for the Karine A business and in no mood to rescue him. Nothing has happened since that goes against that report.

I don't know if the Debka report is true or off the wall. It sounds plausible to me if, and it's a big if, George Bush told Mubarak that fence-sitting would not be tolerated. Even in that case, Mubarak's support may be no more than lip service.

The only thing I do know for sure is that contacts between high-level Egyptian and Israeli officials, which had been almost non-existent for the last few years, have increased dramatically in the past few weeks. The foreign ministers of both countries have gone back and forth. The Israeli Defense Minister is about to meet President Mubarak in Cairo; that hasn't happened for over five years.
