This patent signals the progress Qualcomm is making relative to WCDMA in Europe and Asia. The main difference between CDMA2000 and WCDMA is the way that base stations interact with handsets. It is good to see Qualcomm making strides to offer alternative ways for WCDMA companies to synchronize their asynchronous base stations at incremental levels. The recent white paper from Qualcomm goes into great detail on the subject. It offers 3 methods for synchronizing handovers - gps, self synchronous, and quasi synchronous. None of which require changes to existing 3gpp standards. Hopefully, the new standards due out for 3GPP2 will orgainze the alternatives.
