President Bush was successful in his State of the Union address Tuesday at convincing Americans that he is leading the nation in the right direction at home and abroad, a USA TODAY/CNN/Gallup Poll finds.

Even among Democrats, 72% say he is leading in the right direction; 99% of Republicans and 94% of independents say so....

Of the 60 respondents who thought beforehand that Bush's policies would move the country in the wrong direction, 32 changed their minds....

...On the economy, 88% say the policies outlined in the speech would be very or somewhat effective. Nearly three of four say the Bush economic program was likely to lead the country out of recession....
