I'm not ready to go long yet except for technically attractive trades. Companies generally are writing off eveything on the planet, downsizing overhead, and cutting costs... all good for financial appearances next few quarters. The squeak in this is that capacity utilization in semi's is as low as 40%, see STTS (ST Assembly) in Sinapore.. better control of expenses, order rate level to optimistic. This means profits can't ramp up.. even though they can appear to improve. It also means low inflation. Its a race to see which companies can clear the books fastest.

10:23 ET Flat panel display shortage possible
Digitimes.com reports that HannStar Display (a Taiwanese LCD manufacturer) predicts that shortages in global supply of TFT LCD will occur from Q1 to Q4 in 2002, a prediction that is markedly different from those made by Taiwanese mkt research organizations. This prediction may have a negative affect on GNSS and PXLW, which have benefitted from surging sales of flat-panel displays.

I would have thought this was a good news intermediate term as average selling prices should decline slower that projected. If close to the industry average that would be 10 to 15 percent per year, some times faster depending on the producct.

Anyone have the tape on ONIS from yesterday. It was up in a down market, but it is giving most it back today. I am trying to figure out if it was someone taking a position in advance of earnings (feb 7????) or just dumping it.
