Ok, now I understand your post you mentioned the USD index not the Yen. I am not sure if one can really go so far back to justify currency movements.

The structure of Economies have changed since dramaticaly. At the time I also think inflation and interest rates were in double digits and gold around $900 and oil around $30 a barrel - this only amplifies the fact how undervalued gold and oil are.
