Excessive popularity turns to contempt in just a few years.

Woodrow Wilson was the most popular man in the World at the close of WW 1... He ended up being the object of great ridicule here in the US.

Roosevelt was greatly popular and ended up losing control of the house and senate.

LBJ enjoyed very great popularity because of his social programs, the war helped him to lose it all.

Bush Sr. had great popularity following the Gulf War. He ended up being a consultant to Enron....

Clinton was popular as long as the economy was doing well.

Bush's current popularity will end up being a liability.
