SAN FRANCISCO (CBS.MW) -- Applied Materials echoed recent sentiments of other semiconductor industry exectuives by declaring Wednesday that a bottom has come and gone for its industry.

Speaking at the Banc of America Securities technology conference (see full conference coverage), Randall Bane, managing director of industry and market research for Applied, cited various data points, including increasing foundry revenues and utilization rates, as indications that business conditions are improving.

He also outlined the four areas of concentration needed to grow the world's largest equipment firm in the future: Applied wants to expand its global presence, increase its market share, continue development of new products and acquire companies, he said.
