KTF to offer TV programs over mobile handsets

KTF, the country's second largest mobile carrier, said yesterday it has formed alliances with three major
broadcasting
stations to offer television programs over mobile handsets, heating up competition for a top slot in the
video-on-demand
(VOD) market among mobile carriers.

The company yesterday signed the wireless multimedia content business deal with KBS, SBS and MBC.

Under the deal, KTF will provide popular television soap operas, entertainment, news, traffic and weather
programs over its
icon-based multimedia mobile network, Multipack, beginning in late February.

"With cdma2000 1x EV-DO service just around the corner, KTF has successfully secured plenty of television
content for
mobile subscribers," the company said in a statement.

The move is also part of KTF's strategy to showcase its wireless technologies during the 2002 Korea-Japan
World Cup
final, as the mobile carrier is one of the official sponsors of the world's largest soccer event.

KTF's partnership with broadcasting stations includes joint World Cup promotional events, combining
wireless Internet and
landline networks.

KTF said it plans to offer major World Cup games in real time, utilizing its cdma2000 1x EV-DO, with a
maximum data
transmission speed of 2.4Mbps.

It said Multipack service does not require an upgrade of chips or hardware for the television program
streaming and
download service, as subscribers can upgrade their handset's capabilities by downloading the latest
multimedia platform and
software.

KTF argued that its Multipack is superior to those based on Japan VM (virtual machine) or browser-oriented
services,
largely because the downloadable system consumers less electricity and sports faster multimedia operations.

The company said it will set up its own multimedia broadcasting station in the first quarter of this year to offer
personalized
multimedia content services to subscribe

<< Presto! No need for new announcements. Cost savings! >>

It's sorta like sampling or beginning production shipments "ontime" at Qualcomm. <g>
