Probably a smart move. For every one of Arafat's "million martyrs," there has to be an adverse consequence . . . for the Arabs. Advocates on both sides of the conflict have been blinded by their own propaganda for too long. This conflict can not and will not ever be resolved on the merit of respective claims or "what is right," whatever that means. The success of Jewish terrorists in the Middleast more than half a century ago was not due to their willingness to be "martyrs" regardless what their own propaganda claims, but due to their correct assessment that the British as the world's police was on the retreat and the real power lied with the American sympathy and media. Arabs erred in placing their faith with British law enforcement then, just as they are committing a grave mistake now in challenging American global law enforcment. It's the responsibility of Israeli government to enforce law and order in that piece of land as the de facto constabutory power. Israeli government has to prove itself different from the pathetic and feckless rule that was the last chapter of British Mandate of Palestine (without prejudice to the discipline and restraint shown by the individual British soldiers). Power has to make right and enforce it, or there will be endless violence engendered by opportunists capitalizing on all sorts of claims of real and imaginary grievances. The sooner the Arabs realize power-makes-right, the sooner there will be peace in the region and prosperity for both Jews and Arabs.
