The secret Ix86-64 project is a very sticky wicket for Intel. I believe they have said in the past that IA-64 was their one and only 64-bit computing standard.

Suppose, Compaq calls and says, "Hey, I thought you were going with IA-64 only. That's why WE committed to ONLY make IA64 64-bit servers and no others. So is there an Ix86-64 project or not?

If Intel says "yes", it is a "leak" of new information; it will get out to the investment commmunity. Same thing if an analyst calls. If Intel drops when the news becomes "official," they can be sued for violating the disclouse rules -- i.e., not making all material information disclosed to analysts public.

They could remain totally tight-lipped, saying "no comment" to everyone -- OEM's, analysts, etc. -- and at some future time reveal the project, claiming that it had to be secret for "competive reasons." But, the longer they wait, the more they will really piss off their customers.
