I thought as far as actual shooting is concerned, Israel started the 67 war. Am I mistaken? I thought the war started, when the Israeli Air Force destroyed the Egyptian Air Force, while they were still on the ground.

Yes, that's right. But the Soviet Union really started the war by falsely telling the Syrians that Israel was moving troops to the border. The Syrians were gung-ho anyway, so they started massing troops, then Nasser blockaded the Straits of Tiran and started massing troops, then Jordan had to join in. You get the picture. There was about a month's build-up, at the end of which Israel had a couple of hundred thousand troops massed at the border and was fully mobilized herself. This effectively put a full stop to Israel's economy.

Israel debated whether to strike first or wait for the Arab attack. They decided that the moral edge wasn't worth risking having the country divided in two, so on June 4th they destroyed the Egyptian air force while its pilots were having breakfast. It took Nasser two full days to confess to King Hussein that his airforce was gone.
