South Korea's ailing Hynix Semiconductor Inc. has indicated that it is looking for a new partner as alliance talks with US giant Micron Technology have come to a standstill.

One news report said Hynix, the world's third largest memory chipmaker, may start talks with Infineon AG of Germany.

"In principle, Micron is not the only one that we can negotiate with," Hynix spokeswoman Kang In-Young told AFP. "Micron is not an exclusive negotiation partner."

But Kang refused to confirm a report by the Japanese newspaper Nihon Keizai Shimbun quoting Infineon chief executive Ulrich Schumacher as saying that the German giant and Hynix are considering a business tie-up.

Officials and creditors of Hynix say that negotiations are continuing with Micron, the world's second largest chipmaker.
