That's rather strange since Jordan initially attacked on June 5th and the USS Liberty was attack on June 8th. I don't see the corellation. Israel sent Hussein a message on the morning of June 5th, urging him not to attack. He ignored it, believing Nasser's lies that it was the Israeli Air Force, and not his own, which had been destroyed. (In fact, Nasser was being lied to by his own generals and didn't find out about the destruction of his air force until 4 PM on June 5th). Hussein then unleashed a massive artillery barrage by mid-morning on the 5th, killing and wounding hundreds of Israelis, thus prompting Israel to commence action to relieve Mt. Scopus in Jerusalem, while engaging in a holding action until forces from the Sinai campaign could be freed up to be deployed to the West Bank. The US Liberty was attacked on June 8th, and Israel attacked the Golan Heights against Syria on June 9th. Thus, the USS Liberty incident could have played NO PART in Hussein's decision to wage war on Israel. Btw, Israel intercepted a telephone call on the morning of June 6th (4:30AM) where Nasser and Hussein were trying to decide how to cover up the fact that Israeli aircraft dominated the battlefield. Nasser and Hussein were heard discussing the language of an announcement that the US, or both the US and Britain, were providing carrier based air support, and had entered the war on Israel's side. Three hours later, they made this announcement and Anti-US/UK demonstrations broke out across the Mid-East, and US consulates were attacked. Egypt, Iraq, Yemen, Sudan, Algeria, and Syria all subsequently broke off diplomatic relations with the US as a result of this blatant lie. Only Hussein was smart enough not to do so, and honest enough to apologize for the "mistake" several weeks later. (Info drawn from Howard Sachar's "History of Israel"). Very interesting sign of the desperate meaures these two leaders were willing to undertake, merely to avoid claiming their armies were being defeated by a bunch of Jews. Hawk
