I don't think pro forma numbers per se are the problem. In fact, there are instances where NOT issuing pro forma numbers is deceptive. Of course, GAAP numbers must also be available (and they are).

The focus should be on things like special purpose entities, additional transparency in general, and education of the public. We need MORE disclosure, not less. I'd especially like to see more disclosure on the "Investment Income" line and its associated balance sheet items once those exceed a nominal amount. The ENE/Anderson debacle also suggests that there needs to be a refining of the definition of what is "material" away from relative terms toward absolutes.
