It had nothing to do with "thinking for themselves". First, any party tries to get out the votes. But the main thing is that Newt spent a lot of money working with a pollster named Frank Luntz, trying to find out what words and phrases were better than others. It is absurd to use a phrase that has a bad connotation if one with a good or neutral connotation conveys the same thing. In generally, a lot of marketing research went into the Contract with America, and Newt was trying to use what had been learned.....

Apparently you don't listen to Democrat news conferences and interviews. In large part they all use the same phrases and key words, and emphasize the same points.
