Intel Corp. is moving in a bold new direction in memory chips, following the trail blazed by a maverick 79-year-old inventor named Stanford Ovshinsky.

The semiconductor company this week plans to discuss its progress in exploiting Mr. Ovshinsky's work, at a conference in San Francisco that will highlight a series of semiconductor milestones. Intel also will provide new details concerning a microprocessor, code-named McKinley, that may shape the company's fortunes in high-end computing over the coming few years.

Few of the
