Yea, I remember one rule I used -- never touch my bet after it's been placed. After all, even with a newly-shuffled deck, they payback rate is still 99.5%.

<<Another attention-grabber is pulling back a huge bet (on a VERY favorable count) when the dealer decides to shuffle. I got booted from the Gold Coast after a couple of those moves.>>

Best way to avoid this is the old "where is the bathroom" ploy...otherwise, you need to leave a pretty big bet (maybe not the whole thing) up off the top of the next shoe to avoid heat.

Agree that many dealers count. A counter must avoid places where dealers break the deck down prematurely and shuffle when the count is high in single and double deck, because preferential shuffling gives the house an insurmountable advantage.Best way to avoid this problem is to play at places that use a shuffle card inserted at the beginning of the deck and avoid all others (or at least be very wary of how far they go into the deck when positive counts emerge.

Gold Coast (and all the Coast properties, Orleans, Suncoast and Barbary Coast) are known for being "sweaty" (ie, counter intolerant). Not surprising they gave you the thumb (indeed, my only backoffs have been at coast properties, knock on wood!).
