LaBarge Awarded Contract in Excess of $7 Million to Produce Airport Security Equipment for PerkinElmer Detection Systems
Contract Expands Scope of Manufacturing Work on Airport Checked-Baggage X-Ray Inspection Systems
ST. LOUIS, Jan. 28 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- LaBarge, Inc. (Amex: LB - news) announced today that it was awarded an additional contract in excess of $7 million by PerkinElmer Detection Systems, which expands the Company's role in producing electronic equipment for airport checked-baggage X-ray inspection systems. In addition to producing electronic and box-level assemblies, LaBarge will integrate these assemblies into higher level electronic equipment for the Vivid VIS108, an inspection system that uses X-rays to detect the presence of explosive materials, weapons or other contraband. PerkinElmer Detection Systems, Woburn, Mass., previously awarded the Company contracts valued at $3.5 million to produce the smaller assemblies and components.

The inspection systems are currently used at key international airports to automatically scan checked baggage for the presence of items that, if allowed inside the hull of an aircraft, could threaten the safety of airline passengers. The inspection systems detect contraband with PerkinElmer Detection System's proprietary X-ray techniques and use extensive image processing to identify threatening objects in baggage. The Federal Aviation Administration has approved PerkinElmer Detection Systems detection technology and equipment, which is used throughout the world.
The majority of the work will be performed at LaBarge's Huntsville, Ark., facility, with support from its facilities in Berryville, Ark., and Tulsa, Okla.
The Detection Systems division of PerkinElmer Instruments offers X-ray screening for three major security applications: aviation systems for checked and oversized baggage, break bulk cargo and air freight; port and border applications including pallets, break bulk and air freight; and facility protection, such as parcels, mail and cargo.
