You can do a full install from an upgrade xp disk as long as you have a qualifying disk you can put in when prompted. It will wipe out the old os. Here's a good article on setup.

Being a gamer I'm sure you have plenty of machine to make the move but if you're planning on upgrading an older computer just to try XP don't bother. You will not be happy installing XP on anything less than a 600-800 cpu and don't spare the ram...256 minimum.
