SINGAPORE (Reuters) - Singapore manufacturers have a cautious outlook for the first half of 2002 due to seasonal factors as well as uncertainties about the U.S. economy and electronics demand, the Economic Development Board (EDB) said on Friday.

Despite the caution, industrialists were slightly more optimistic in the first quarter of this year compared with the last quarter of 2001, it added.

The EDB quarterly survey, conducted in the last two months among 413 manufacturers, showed that fewer were expecting weaker business conditions in the next six months.

The EDB said a net weighted balance of 20 percent expected weaker conditions compared with 29 percent last quarter.

Sentiment in the key electronics sector, which accounts for about 50 percent of the city state's manufacturing output, also improved with 26 percent expecting a weaker market against 36 percent in the preceding quarter.

Electronics output in the first quarter was expected to be lower than the final quarter of 2001 due to seasonal factors such as the post-Christmas lull and the Lunar New Year holiday in February.
