UMC operating revenues drop 44.2% in 2001

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Silicon foundry supplier United Microelectronics Corp. today released preliminary results for 2001, showing its net operating revenue dropped 44.2% to NT$64.5 billion ($1.9 billion) compared to NT$115.6 billion ($3.4 billion) in 2000.

UMC's unaudited annual results show the foundry company with a net loss of NT$3.2 billion ($94 million) in 2001 compared to a net income of NT$50.8 billion ($1.5 billion) in 2000. Both UMC's revenues and net loss were slightly better than previous estimated, according to the company, which is scheduled to post its full results for 2001 and the fourth quarter on Feb. 5.

Earlier this month, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Ltd. (TSMC) reported its revenues fell 24.2% to NT$125.9 billion ($3.7 billion) compared to NT$166.2 billion ($4.9 billion). The world's largest silicon foundry supplier posted a net income of NT$14.5 billion ($426 million) for 2001 vs. a net income of NT$65.1 billion ($1.9 billion).
