I'm not a tech guy like you and rudedog and the rest of the boys, but I think this is huge news.

First, Compaq has a significant installed base, who is wondering about any upgrade path, second, Compaq is taking care of the "bumps". The lessons that will be learned in the future transitions should they occur will have a knowledge data base that should relax the most nervous of IT professionals.

The confluence of the platform will mean that software programs AND tunings will be readily available to all.

This is a Tsunami, IF Merced, the next generation (?) is fast enough, and rudedog says he has seen it and he says yes.

In any event, and yes I know Compaq's ability to advance Alpha will be somewhat limited :) in the future, but they also, (probably based on rudedog's advice) must have made a real determination that the speed is feasible.
