It happens why you rely on the research of others instead of doing your own due diliegence. Frank Veneroso did great work on the gold markets in 1996-1997 which showed the potential problems with hedging, leasing, and large gold short positions. Murphy jumped on this bandwagon under the assumption that short postions could not be maintained and the market would implode sending prices upward. He was around on SI long enough in 1998 to promote his Le Metropole Cafe and make bullish gold predictions (gold at $350 going to $400) My few emails with him consisted of telling him I would link his site to my site, pointing out market dislocations can last for extended periods of time and $300 gold was more likely than $400, and wished him luck. It's too bad he was on the wrong side of the market in 1998 and probably lost money, but the signs to not invest it gold looked pretty obvious to me. Anyway, it is his right to form GATA and find someone else to blame.

To use a football analogy (in honor of Bill's half season career) - he got into someone else's game late in the fourth quarter, fumbled the ball, the game pretty much ended in September 1999, and everyone has left the stands except for a few GATA fans asking the referee to change the call. It's too bad when you still think you could have make the big game touchdown if not for the actions of others. Sure maybe somebody did make an illegal maneuver on the field, but that still doesn't mean the touchdown would have been made. Game over !!!
