I will call those that were responsible for the monstrous and inhuman
bombings war criminals of the highest degree, no more, no less....

I'm reminded of a favorite quote from Lawyer Abe Lincoln.

How many legs, he was asked, does a sheep have if you call the tail a leg?

Four, answered Lincoln, because calling the tail a leg doesn't make it one.

You call those people whatever you want to. I will be grateful that they did what they did to preserve the freedom you have to call them whatever you want to.

That is a remarkable statement. I believe we are all "responsible"--although such a concept is hard to wrap the mind around.

It surely was inhuman and murderous. Children are not guilty of anything. They should never be destroyed to satisfy anyone's whim. It is just too ugly for words...

See now, that is where you lose me. You presume what I cannot: that Truman and his advisors had the requisite malice to be war criminals, that they had to appreciate the evil of their actions, and nevertheless, out of vengeance, racism, and/or political calculation, went ahead with them. I cannot see people who treated their former enemies with such consideration, or who otherwise strike one has being men of character, with a normal array of foibles, could have done it. They had to think that they were saving more lives than they were taking..........
