For the vast majority of Americans, there is no problem, because they are covered one way or another. Even the "30 to 40 million" was mostly composed of those in transient situations, for example, being between jobs, so that the numbers of people in chronic jeopardy was a fraction of that.

There's no dearth of numbers around in this field. What I recall of the numbers, is that you've got around 80-85% of the population covered by either Medicare, Medicaid or private insurance. One can certainly, raise a challenge to how well covered a person under Medicaid is and what are the limits under Medicare, e.g., % coverage of health care and no prescription coverage.

The bulk of people in the US are employeed by small business [~60%, as I recall] and a very significant portion of those small businesses in the US do not provide health coverage [~40%]. The transient number may be somewhat of a distraction; many of the transients are between one uncovered job and another uncovered job.
