Compiled from outsides sources by David Tzeng; Willie Teng, DigiTimes.com [Monday 4 February 2002]

With global PC sales bouncing back by 16.7% on the quarter to 35.48 million units in the fourth quarter of 2001, the PC market looks to be on the verge of recovery, according to market research firm Dataquest. Fourth-quarter sales of desktops, notebooks and PC servers climbed 17.8%, 13.5% and 10.5%, respectively, from the previous quarter.

Dell Computer, though still the global PC leader, saw its market share in the fourth quarter decline to 13.3% from the third quarter’s 13.8%. Rivals Compaq Computer and Hewlett-Packard (HP) raised their market shares from a respective 10.5% and 6.6% in the third quarter to 11.1% and 7.8% in the fourth quarter.

Sony enjoyed the strongest growth among Japanese companies. Its fourth-quarter sales reached 960,000 units, up 81.3% from the previous quarter’s 530,000 units. The company’s notebook sales increased by 70% from the third quarter’s 356,000 units, to 611,000 units, making it the world’s fifth-largest notebook company.
