"they were satisfied that they had done what was necessary to subdue a fanatical, suicidal opponent......." I don't know who "they" is, but I can tell you that "they" who dropped the bombs were in the minority. If it was not for one man--Mr. Groves--the bombs would NEVER have been dropped. He controlled it from beginning to end, and when the 75 (or whatever it was) scientific signatures were presented to Truman...they NEVER GOT THERE. Did they demonstrate the bomb? NO? Did they inform Japan about the bomb? NO? Did they avoid civilians in their targeting? NO? Did they give the city time for evacuation? NO? Did Nagasaki add anything to the "lesson" other than a different type of bomb test? NO? Although the Americans had broken the naval code from before Midway..did they ever attempt to encourage a "surrendar"...NO?? It is harder to make someone crawl than it is to make them quit. Forcing them to Crawl cost the allies (and the world) thousands of lives. You have no business pretending that they "slept well". Some may have; but many have written that they did not...
