"Having an actual customer phone number on a cash refund is a requirement by most companies"

the operative word here, phil, is actual.

how do these stores endeavor to assure themselves that the numbers they get are actual? dial it on the spot? doesn't happen. so when me and a whole bunch of other people who are not willing to tolerate this sort of intrusive store policy provide the clerk with a bogus phone number, what happens then? what does the auditor do then? and how does the auditor even determine if the number is actual in the first place?

i just don't get this whole phone number thing and i must be honest, i have my sincere doubts that it has anything to do with audits. unless you or someone else can give me some valid responses to the questions i've asked above concerning actual numbers, i'm sticking to the story that these boys just want personal info for marketing purposes.

Thanks for the explanation. I still think I'll let the store take care of it's loss prevention efforts without my giving up my privacy.
