I could go on and on. I'll simply conclude that America's system for dealing with drugs seems more for America's politicans than anyone. Over and over, election after election, politicians continue to milk the free ride of Drug War issues as they postulate tougher and tougher (look busy) positions before a genuinely concerned citizenry. So much money gets wasted and we don't get anywhere near a solution. I think many of the ills which plague our society and our relationships with other nations could be cured if America were to completely reexamine and completely overhaul how it deals with drugs.

I basically agree with your post. Of course, it is in the interest of the law enforcement establishment to keep it illegal, which is unfortunate. Legalizing would at least take the money out of it.

Sorry to be off topic. I'll shut up now.

America can't keep drugs out of closed-in prisons, so how can you expect to keep 'em out of a free society?

Don't disagree with you on that point. Supply reduction can only go so far.

What's really needed is a concerted DEMAND REDUCTION program, and running superbowl ads tying drug trafficking to terrorist organizations is one means by which to change people's hearts and minds. It plants the seed that using hard drugs is tantamount to providing comfort and support to the enemy.

I'm not such a prude that I believe marijuana is some kind of "killer drug".. In fact, I often find myself agreeing with those who want to legalize and tax it, as we do with that other legal drug, alcohol.

But Heroin, Cocaine, and designer drugs which are far more potent, and damaging to one's health, I think we must draw the line and take action.

Some people say that if we legalized hard drugs, there wouldn't be as much usage of them. But the fact that Latin American kids are buying 1/2 grams of Basuco for .50 and literally destroying their minds is evidence that this is not the case.

Hard narcotics are used as a two pronged attack against western societies. They provide the funds these extremists rely upon to carry out their activities, while undermining the very fabric of the societies they wish to destroy.

Demand reduction is the key, and if playing on patriotic fervor helps accomplish that to some measure, it's worth every penny.

It's good to see a thorough, and thoughtful review without merely taking the easy way out, Cheech&Chonging it with silliness and sarcasm, as I woulda done. Thanks for covering it well.
