The Aussie age pension is much less than typical American social security payouts. We don't pretend the government is saving money for anyone's retirement and neither do we have higher future taxes looming to pay for it, only for health care costs.

Complaints about the system are that most superannuation money gets directed into large cap Aussie and foreign stocks and away from small business so it is effectively a tax on that part of the economy. You can have a "DIY super fund" but it is a big administrative hassle.
