Just consider how simple that decision was:

1) Nobody in the US admin is fooled about what Arafat is.

2) If Arafat is cut off, Arab allies bolt and the regional eruption would compel policy changes in a new direction, at a time when the current direction is gathering fruit by the bushels worldwide.

3) Without Arafat, the subsequent power vacuum gains nothing perceived to be of value to US interests.

4) The US should also not appear to be Sharon's stooge, as well.

Nadine, Can't you imagine the conversation between W and Abdullah?

Abdullah: Mr President, do you know what to do about Sharon?

W: Nope... Your Highness, do you have any idea what to do about Arafat?

A: No.

W:What a mess!

A: Indeed, it is.

Long pause...

W: How are the wife and kids?

A, brightening: Very well, thank you. And Mrs. Bush and your daughters?

Etc.
