Hmmmm.. Some stuff there I've never seen.

Let's try an experiment to see if any device drivers/tsr are affecting your D: and E:

click as follows

start
run
type "sysedit" no quotes
enter

We will add a "rem" command to some lines to temporarily disable the item on boot up for a test.

Type the text in bold in the appropriate file
as shown below.

DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS
DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.EXE NOEMS
DOS=HIGH,UMB,AUTO
FILESHIGH=80
DEVICE=C:\essolo.sys
BUFFERSHIGH=40,4
DEVICEHIGH=C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\CPQIDECD.SYS /D:IDECD001
SHELL=C:\COMMAND.COM /P /E:2048

@C:\PROGRA~1\GRISOFT\AVG6\bootup.exe
@Echo off
C:\essolo.com
if exist c:\pipost.bat call c:\pipost.bat
if exist c:\pipost.bat del c:\pipost.bat
SET PATH=C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\WBEM;%PATH%;C:\WINDOWS\LHSP;C:\PROGRA~1\GRISOFT\AVG6
rem c:\windows\system\verflop.com
rem c:\windows\system\verflop.com

NOTICE the space after rem

Save the files.
Reboot
Check your D:

This seems strange...

This line loads a DOS driver for the CD

DEVICEHIGH=C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\CPQIDECD.SYS /D:IDECD001

But Windows doesn't need to load this driver from CONFIG.SYS at all.

But equally as strange, after loading the DOS driver, you don't load the DOS TSR that uses it. I'd expect to see a line in AUTOEXEC.BAT that looks like this

C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\MSCDEX /D:IDECD001

Disable the loading of CPQIDECD.SYS by placing a REM at the beginning of the line. This will disable the unneeded, (and unused) DOS device driver. This may reduce Windows’ confusion about your CD drives.

Cheers, PW.

P.S.
